Groth, Vilhelm (1842-1899)

Entire name: Georg Vilhelm Arnold Groth.

Born on Mar. 9^th in Copenhagen, Denmark.

After attending the F.F. Helsted School of Drawing and later took lessons from C.V. Nielsen he was admitted to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Copenhagen) in 1861 and graduated from there in 1866. Later, in 1871-72 he attended The Vilh. Kyhn Garden Atelier.

He made several study tours abroad, starting in Stockholm in 1871. He went to Italy several times in the 1870’s but his study tours to Paris (1872-73, 1875-76 and 1877-78) made the largest impression on him.

He debuted at the esteemed Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions in 1866 and exhibited there continuously henceforth. Apart from exhibiting at other prominent Danish exhibitions he also exhibited at The World Exhibitions (Paris) in 1876.

The tour to Paris in 1876-77, where he was accompanied by Godfred Christensen and Chr. Zacho, opened his eyes for the new French art approach, and his artistic manner became a kind of synthesis of elements from Kyhn and the French landscape painters from around the middle of the 19^th century.
