Bøgh, Carl (1827-1893)

Biography

Christian name: Carl Henrik Bögh.
Born on Sep. 3rd 1827 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Initially he became a journeyman painter in 1849 and was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1851. He attended the School of Painters from 1852 and for some time he studied under J.L. Lund.
Bögh was a widely travelled artist who made study tours to Düsseldorf, Brussels, Antwerp and especially Paris in 1861 and 1862. Later he made several study tours to Vienna, Norway and Sweden.
In 1857 he won the Neuhausen Prize and received travelling scholarships in 1861 and 1862 (which were used for the above-mentioned study tours).
He debuted at the esteemed Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions in 1854 and exhibited there continuously henceforth with an exception in 1884. Apart from that he among other also exhibited at the Nordic Art Exhibitions (Copenhagen) 1872, 1883 and 1888.
Initially Carl Böghs paintings were anecdotic street lives but later animal painting became his real field of activity. Several of his paintings were made at the estate Gl. Estrup where he was an annual guest in the 1880’s. Here he found his motifs in the surrounding countryside that to him was the essence of Nordic nature. The paintings are carefully worked through and are characterized by a high degree of detail.
